Mumbai Entrepreneur Sends Struggling Employee on Paid Vacation Instead of Salary Cut, Earns Praise for Empathetic Leadership

Mumbai entrepreneur Dhruv Mukherjee earned social media appreciation after sending employee Aarya on a fully paid three-day vacation instead of cutting her salary for poor performance. The Blue Lobster Media founder’s empathetic leadership approach focused on understanding personal struggles, improving productivity, and building workplace trust.

A Mumbai-based entrepreneur has gained widespread appreciation on social media after choosing an unconventional approach to address an employee’s declining performance. Instead of reducing her salary, he arranged a fully paid three-day vacation to help her regain focus, recover from personal challenges, and return to work with renewed energy.

Dhruv Mukherjee, founder of Blue Lobster Media, shared the incident in a LinkedIn post, explaining that his company’s Content Operations Lead, Aarya, had been facing difficulties for nearly a month. He said several issues began affecting the team’s workflow, including delayed content approvals, extended editing timelines, and inconsistent work quality.

According to Mukherjee, tasks that normally required around one hour were taking more than four hours, while approvals were often being completed at the last moment. He discussed the concerns with Aarya and worked with her on possible solutions. He stated that they addressed the problems together and she assured him that she would improve.

However, the challenges continued throughout the month. Mukherjee then gave her direct feedback, telling her, “This is not working out. Maybe you’re not ready for an operations role.”

The feedback left Aarya disappointed. Mukherjee said she requested another opportunity and even offered to accept a salary reduction if that would allow her more time to prove herself.

“I promise I can do it. You can take whatever penalty you think is valid, but please give me more time,” she told him.

Following the conversation, Mukherjee said he spoke with Aarya again to understand the situation better. During the discussion, he learned that she had been dealing with personal issues that were affecting her ability to stay focused despite her efforts to perform well.

Instead of imposing a financial penalty, Mukherjee decided to provide support. He arranged a three-day Airbnb stay for Aarya, with all expenses covered by the company. The plan was designed to give her a fresh environment without workplace interruptions.

Under the arrangement, Aarya would spend two days working from the new location and use the third day to relax and recharge before returning to her responsibilities. Mukherjee also arranged a desk for her at a co-working facility near her home to provide a peaceful and regular workspace.

The decision received significant appreciation from LinkedIn users, many of whom highlighted the importance of empathy and understanding in workplace leadership.

One user commented, “Love this Dhruv Mukherjee you created psychological safety that rarely shows up on a balance sheet, but it quietly changes how people perform. When someone feels safe enough to admit they’re struggling, the real problem becomes much easier to solve.”

Another user wrote, “Great call, Dhruv. Leading with empathy like this is what builds real loyalty and long-term performance. People remember how you showed up for them when things were hard.”

The incident has drawn attention to a leadership approach focused on employee support, workplace trust, and addressing underlying challenges rather than immediately applying punitive measures.
